Larry Gibson Memorial Training

In preparation for our December 1st Day of Action, we held a successful and faithful training this past weekend with 15 participants at the Merion Meetinghouse. Nada Cooke-White and Dustin White traveled from Boone County, West Virginia, to speak with our group on Friday night about the devastation caused by mountaintop removal - - Dustin and Nada work with OVEC (the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition), drove a long distance and we were grateful to receive them. (This summer, Dustin joined us at PNC's headquarters in Pittsburgh at the end of our Green Walk.)

On Saturday morning, we took a sample of contaminated water from West Virginia to the nearby Narberth PNC branch, for an action with our organizers-in-training and other members of the EQAT family. The bank manager told us that our singing was interrupting his business, but Dustin showed him the jar of coal slurry and we were able to talk to him about what business-as-usual means for the health and environment of Appalachia.

We spent much of that day training and exploring the meaning and impact of campaigns like ours (Bank Like Appalachia Matters!), wrapping things up in the evening with a live concert by West Philly bluegrass band Sour Mash. The weekend included skill-building workshops, and an action planning session for the upcoming PNC Day of Action - every participant walked out of Merion Friends Meeting with a draft plan for the action they are organizing on December 1st.

We are having a lot of fun building a movement to stop climate change; if you want to help put together the December 1st Day of Action, or if you want to plan an action in your area for December 1st, email Zachary at eqateam@gmail.com.
